  1. "You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect the dots looking backwards" "you have to trust in something" "the only way to do great work is to love what you do" "keep looking. don't settle" "if today were my last day would I want to do what I am going to do today?" "have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become, everything else is secondary" these are some of the quotes that stuck out to me. I felt like this speech is something that everyone should listen to, not just college graduates. Frankly these are all life lessons that everyone can learn from. I have heard this speech before and I still love it. Every time I hear it, it motivates me and makes me want to be a better person.

    1. I agree with you! I think that this is something that should be played for everyone struggling to feel like they're doing the right thing! He summed it up perfectly! Great response :)

    2. That was probably my biggest take away from it Courtney! When he asked, "if today were my last day would I want to do what I am going to do today?" We should probably be asking ourselves that everyday.

  2. The first thing that stuck out to me was how unafraid he was to talk about the fact that he dropped out of college. I had never seen this video before, and truthfully, I did not know much about his story other than he had gotten fired from Apple. Something that he said later on in the video really struck me. It was when he was talking about death, and how everyone is headed towards it no matter what, he said "death is very likely the single best invention of life....your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life." Lately, I have been very discouraged with the way school and softball and just life in general has been going, that I have caught myself being envious or wishing that I could live someone else's life. However, God has taught me through my sickness and through the passions He has put in my heart, that my life is unique, important, and valued, and I should waste the time ive been given living someone else's life. This was an extremely inspiring video!

    1. Yes, Gaby, I would agree with you. I also really liked the part when he talked about death. I often forget that we are running time bombs, everyday getting closer to our deaths however unaware of it we may be. I think that the best thing we can do with the gift of death is enjoy and live each day to the fullest whether it is a day full of work or a day full of fun. There is so much beauty that we cannot see if we are just going through the motions, but if you knew this day would be your last, would you just go through the motions?

    2. "He has put in my heart, that my life is unique, important, and valued, and I shouldn't waste the time ive been given living someone else's life." Very well said, Gaby. I think envy slows our growth with Christ because we're too busy trying to be like somebody else.

    3. Gabby I agree it really stuck out to me how he boldly talked about dropping out of college while speaking as one of the greatest colleges in the world. I also learned so much about him and fell inspired by his story.

  3. This was a really good speech by Steve Jobs. I really liked that he talked about how he was a college dropout because sometimes college isn't for everybody. I also really liked when he said the goal of life is to pursue a career in something that makes you passionate, and you feel alive doing. In regards to my own life, the things I am studying in school are my passion, and I hope that eventually when I am in the field, I will feel alive doing it!

    1. I also appreciated and resonated with Jobs' perspective on a career path! His determination and dedication to satiating his curiosity was able to help him achieve some of the great successes he is known for. I love that you mention how you are studying what you are passionate about, because I think it's a beautiful opportunity we have to go to school and study our greatest passions. I wonder if there was another major or path Jobs would have enjoyed more than the major he dropped out of, or if college was truly never something he was meant for.

    2. I appreciate that part of Jobs' message too! I feel like it's something more students should hear during their years in high school before attending college. Some students feel discouraged and disinterested in academia, yet they are forced to continue in it rather than exploring different careers and potentially seeing trade schools as an option for their futures.

  4. I agree with your points about Steve Jobs' speech. I think it is important to do what makes us happy and what we are passionate about! I am glad that you are doing things that are enjoyable to you!

  5. I feel like this speech touched on something that higher education doesn't really focus on anymore, and that is learning about what interests you. He said he wanted to take a class on calligraphy, so he did. He ended up using that to implement the most widely-used fonts to the day. What would school, and college specifically, look like if we didn't take the classes that would make us more profitable, but rather the classes that we wanted to take and would make us more motivated to work hard and actually learn in. Jobs was a bold and brilliant man!

    1. I believe that this would give people more of an incentive to go to college if they could solely focus on classes that they wanted to take. Higher education demands so many courses that many people feel that they will not utilize later on in life, causing many people to not pursue education in general. Even if a student wanted to take a class they wanted, they likely will not because of this fear of graduating late.

  6. Steve Jobs addresses the passions of life, aside from simply the degree we may earn in college. Though his path was unconventional, it was successful for him because he maintained a curious drive as he pursued a life worth living. I believe that whatever path we choose, it should be valued in the same way Jobs discussed. We should constantly be hungry, foolish, and daring to achieve everything we hope to. He introduces the perspective of living every day like it might be your last, and truly lives up to that mantra. By staying self-motivated, any fears are overcome and risks can be taken without regret. Jobs failed many times, in our traditional sense of failure, but he explains that he would't change any of these moments because these are the dots that later connected to form his successes.

    1. Steve Jobs' life in general is a perfect example of picking yourself up when life has you down. Other people who would have been placed in Jobs situation would have simply given up, but he chose to learn from his predicament. I agree that staying self-motivated in life is a necessity because there will always be hard times in your life no matter what.

  7. Steve Jobs addressed many hard situations that people have to deal with in life, and how it is important how they choose to react to them. Many times when something bad happens to a person, that person immediately blames God for allowing that to happen. However, Steve Jobs mentions how it is important to never lose faith because everything happens for a reason. Some of his greatest achievements in his lifetime came at a point in his life when he had seen much hardship. What he was trying to get across was that it is important to keep your faith strong and have something to look forward to in order to keep you going. By having a clear and strong picture of the future, this will help the person stand back up when life becomes difficult. We all face certain times where we feel like we can not go on anymore, but Steve Jobs took that as a learning opportunity and chose to grow from that. As we constantly walk through life, we should take everything as an opportunity to learn and grow from it. It is crazy to think how something so small as taking one college class can have such large implications ten years later on. People are sometimes too focused on the finish line that they sometimes forget to enjoy the ride.

    2. I agree Brandon. Steve Jobs overcame many hardships, and most importantly he never lost faith. He had a clear vision of his future, and this is one of the reasons why he was able to have such success.

  8. It amazing to hear Steve Jobs story and to see where he has been and to see what he has gone through to get to where he is today. Watching this video I never knew the struggles that he had to face growing up and how this billionaire had to overcome so much in life to get where he is at today. He talks about not giving up on your dreams and to follow your heart. I believe that we all need live by that in our lives.

    1. I didn't know his story either! I think sometimes when people make it this big we don't assume they face any more struggles. I love his story because it gives hope to so many others. That despite your beginning and the journey ahead, you chose the path you can take.

    2. Lindsay, I agree with you, I never knew Steve Jobs had to go through so much struggle in his life to get where he got to. It shows that perseverance and hard work can get you to where you want to be. If you are not happy with where you are in life, you need to take action and be the one that enacts change.

    4. What amazes me more about this story is how all of these hardships in his life added up to everything he had at that point. It is really admirable how he took the lemons he was handed and turned it into a supremely successful computer company

  9. It's crazy how human he is. I think we often create people to be this perfect person when they've made it in life and become rich. Steve Jobs just shows us that its the opportunities in life that can change us. I love how fearless he is and how he encourages everyone that life is not uniform and that we all need to walk a path that is best for each of us.

    1. Seneca once had a quote that I think is quite applicable here, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." It's people like Jobs that prove this to be true. One wonders, how did everything fall into place along the way? But then you realize that he was always ready. He wasn't a person who waited for his chance, he made his chance.

  10. This was an amazing video and I am so glad for the opportunity to have watched it. I think what stood out most for me was the fact that he did not go to college. Yes, I knew this, but hearing him talk about it just really puts a lot into perspective. There is so much pressure today to go to college and graduate school. You are made to believe that if you do not succeed in school, then you will be a failure in your life. This way of thinking is so flawed and is just so bad for society. We need innovative thinkers, people whose minds have not been obstructed by the views of the world. People who are not afraid to think and to act on those thoughts. We need people who work in trades. Skilled workers make more money than many individuals who have gone to college. I think that as a society, we need to be encouraging people in all ways, and not making them feel like failures for not going to college.

    1. I totally agree with you Kelly. There such a pressure once you graduate high school to go to college, but someone people that just not the path that their supposed to go in. I think if we don't force these views on students, then students will truly go into a career that they truly love.

  11. Steve Jobs' commencement speech has valuable life lessons. He tells stories about his life, and each of these stories gives insight to how one can overcome struggle and hardship by way of determination. Steve Jobs was not given much when he was growing up. Nevertheless, Steve Jobs was able to critically evaluate his life and his future. He was able to realize what was important for accomplishing his goals, and what was not essential for bettering his future. By dropping out of college, it shows that Steve Jobs has great self awareness. Moreover, by starting Apple, and getting fired from that same company, he was able to overcome this obstacle. His whole life he has been overcoming obstacles and hardships. Even though Steve Jobs, has not always had an easy life, he became one of the most influential innovators this world will ever see. Steve Jobs has proven that anything is possible, if you never give up. If you always stay focused on accomplishing your goals you can have success.

  12. I love how Steve Jobs shared parts of his story. I appreciate what he said about how we need to trust that the dots will connect for us in the future in a way that pushes us to pursue what we are being pulled toward even if it takes us off of the well-worn path. From a Christian perspective, I think that God many times stirs in us the push to take leaps of faith into situations that don't make sense or seem foolish to others. We have to trust that the dots will connect though! I also found it interesting that he said, "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." I believe that having a love for what you do brings you to do better at it, but to think that love for what you do is potentially necessary for greatness is something cool to think about for me. I was also impacted by his view on how seemingly bad events (like him being fired from Apple) can turn out to be the best things that could ever happen to a person and how death is one of the greatest products of life. This video has made me think and also find more value in being open to ideas and life paths that may seem crazy on the surface.

    1. I totally agree with you Jenny. I loved how you connected your christian worldview to what Steve Jobs was talking about in his speech. God give us that push, but we have to be the one that pursue it which is so cool to see.

    2. Hey Jenny!
I love how you pulled ‘connecting the dots' from Job’s speech. Jobs does a really good job of this in this speech. From his own real life story to making us believe that everything happened for a reason. I also really like your Christian perspective. God knows what He is doing. We have t trust in Him and take that leap of faith. Overall, good job!!

    3. Fascinating how one can see God in the meaning of his words, isn't it? Though nobody but Steve knows for sure, I don't think he ever converted to Christianity. I think it's a good reminder that God is present in all existence; His influence is always there, even in places where He's supposedly absent.

  13. I really love Steve Jobs, who contributes a lot in smart phone. During the speech, he told us lots of his own stories. it is amazing that Steve Jobs dropped out of the university. However, he did not stop learning. Knowledge is dramatically essential. Although he dropped out if school, he still try his best to go to class and learn some new knowledge, which helped him to innovate the outstanding font. In addition, he said that the goal of life is to pursue a career in something that makes you passionate. I should find the career I really love, and work on it.

  14. In this speech I learned so much about Steve Jobs. One thing that I took away from this is sometimes the plans that you have not always come about the way you wanted them too. Steve parents wanted him to go to college, but that wasn't the right fit for him. They wanted him to be successful, but he found his success in alternate ways. Even though he didn't finish college he never stop learning and thats what made him successful. The second thing I learned is pursue something that your truly passionate about. Don't just settle. Keep striving to do your best and find something that you love. Overall I thought the speech was great and took many things away from it.

    1. Hey Madison,
Your take on this is really interesting. I totally agree with you on that success happens with your individual self. It is not always about go ing to college to be successful like most of us were taught. If you have the passion for it, you can be successful. Steve Jobs story is the perfect example. Good Job!!

  15. Honestly, Steve Jobs know exactly what to say. The fact that he stood up in front of all those people and discuss his own life. His college experience changed his life. He grew up knowing he was going to college but his path changed courses when he was actually there. The fact that he questioned himself, “Why am I here?” really got me to think, “Why did I pick going to college? Did I make the right choice?” These questions helped me gain a better understanding of who I am and why I am going to college. To be a teacher, you need a bachelor’s degree but not every job requires a degree in something. The fact that he took a path that most kids don’t take and made a career out it is amazing. This video made me realize to not take life for granted.

  16. I found this to be quite a fascinating speech. His first point about pursuing the classes that interested him (without receiving credit) instead of following the system stuck out to me in particular, as this is an issue that I see everywhere in our education system. It’s focused too much on a one size fits all approach, funneling students through narrow passageways that perhaps don’t best play to their strengths. Imagine if we lived in a society where we encouraged specialization and celebrated difference, rather than doing our best to erase the qualities that make us unique.

I think the final point about his cancer was a fascinating (and poignant) reminder of mortality, too, and serves as an ironic punctuation to his speech, though nobody knew it at the time. The whole talk was about how everything turned out okay, how even seemingly insurmountable roadblocks ended up being surprise blessings in his life. All of this culminated in the story of cancer, and how he came to beat it, against all odds. Yet, as we now know, Jobs died from that same cancer six years later. What was once the most crowning point of his speech about prevailing in the face of hardship ended up being the very thing that proved to be the exception to the rule. There’s something to be learned here, but I don’t know quite what.

    1. Hey Mitch, I agree that classes focus too much on tailoring to a group of students rather than each individual student. Every student should have the opportunity to express their uniqueness in the classroom. I found it interesting that Steve Jobs was able to succeed as he did without going through college. It goes to show that anyone can do anything with a strong work ethic.

  17. It's cool to hear Steve Jobs talk about his story and how he isn't ashamed that he dropped out of college. It just shows that although education is important, you can still make it in life without it as long as you work hard in whatever you are passionate about. It's amazing to see how much he had to overcome and how successful he was.

  18. I found Steve Jobs' speech to be inspiring. The fact that he did not attend college was really interesting because I did not know this about him. This proves that no one truly needs college to succeed and education does not measure success. I think Jobs' speaking is empowering and made me realize worth in myself. The fact that he was able to speak in front of a prestigious school like Stanford and tell his stories is really awesome and I applaud him for doing so.

  19. I found this commencement speech to be both interesting and inspirational. I find that with most commencement speeches there is often a theme of “be the best you can be” or “the world is yours to take” etc. However, I feel that Steve Jobs has given a realistic approach to his speech with personal stories about his life that can inspire us. Being able to hear an individual’s stories of how they went from nothing to everything gives us the feeling that anybody can do it. I think most people get lost in the ideas of not having the tools or opportunities necessary to be successful. Or it is common for someone to believe that you have to be born wealthy to be wealthy in the future. I often find myself lost in these thoughts. Steve Jobs made a comment about how he hoped he would always be hungry and foolish and I think this is important to remember when feeling lost about where you are in life. Most importantly it is valuable to live by these words. You should always chase the dreams that you have; stay hungry to be successful. And be foolish enough to continue moving forward even when it seems that life is against you. This commencement speech really stayed with me and helped me step back and realize that I need to pay more attention to what I love and making each day in my life valuable rather than rush through them all. Overall, I really enjoyed this speech.

  20. It's refreshing to hear someone advocating for people to follow their passion rather than following the dollar. Along with this, it is interesting to hear how even as a college dropout, Jobs still had a passion to learn. When I was in high school, my friends and I used to joke about college and how our lives would be ruined if we don't go and major in a STEM field or become a lawyer. However, that worry was very real and still proves to be real with the high school students I tutor. Hearing figures like Jobs encourage people to learn what they want to learn, rather than what is profitable gives me hope. If people treated learning in school more like how Jobs did, or if school treated learning more like Jobs did, I feel students would be more enthusiastic about their adult lives rather than dreading the preparation for a career.

  21. This was a very fascinating speech to encounter. Steve Jobs has a remarkable testimony and the stories he shared were very appropriate for the circumstances. I really liked how thoroughly he emphasized the beauty and value of life and all that comes with living. We have not been promised a perfect or easy life on Earth and I am so grateful for it because through our mistakes and our challenges we are presented with opportunities to turn to Christ and build our foundation of faith to grow and learn and remind ourselves that every day is a new one because our Savior gave His life for ours. Although Steve Job's speech was not a religious one, I found the overall theme he was putting out to the students and families in the audience was a relatable one for any walk of life. In my case, the easiest connection is to faith and the privilege we have to even be walking on the graciously given ground we live our day to day lives on.
